What is data visibility? What does it mean for modern companies?

The concept of data visibility is becoming a more prevalent topic of conversation, but when it comes to what it actually means, people can get confused.

Don’t worry. It’s not actually as complex as it sounds.

Let’s try a driving analogy. When you’re out in your car, the distance that you can see clearly is your visibility. It decides your speed, how close you are to other cars, and how you’ll get to your destination.

But on a foggy or rainy day, your visibility is super reduced. You’ll need to turn on your headlights, in order to get to your destination.

The same can be said with how data is stored and processed.

The destination when it comes to data is whether or not you can use it for analysis. Data, by itself, is relatively useless. People have and store the data in order to get to a conclusion – or destination.

If you have huge amounts of unstructured data, it’s the equivalent of driving in a foggy day. You can’t see where you’re going, or where you need to make a turn. But by putting some structure in your data, you can improve the visibility. It’s essentially the same as turning on your fog lights.

Why Does Data Visibility Matter

Access to data allows you to make accurate and informed decisions about the way in which your company is running. Ensuring that your organization has accurate data requires all of the data to be visible to you when you need it.

In order to make decisions, you need to be confident that the information you have is accurate, protected, and suitable for analysis. You need to make sure you’ve got the full picture.

If you only have data visibility in one segment of your business, then you’ll be trying to make decisions without having all of the information.

Data visibility allows you to create both depth and breadth of data analysis. You can see how points are affected over time, and therefore make sure that you are making the best decisions with the widest range of information possible.

What Does This Mean For Modern Companies?

Regardless of your company’s field, it’s impossible to overstate the value that a single piece of clear data can represent.

Through careful and precise monitoring, you can track the data as it makes its way through your process, and then make adjustments and changes as necessary.

Data visibility is the difference between being able to see the journey your customer or potential customer goes on, and to understand the hazards and roadblocks that they encounter. It provides you the opportunity to analyze the full process from initial contact to fulfillment. You can then identify problems, and adjust your team’s focus to directly counter the issue.

But in order to do any of this, you need to have visibility of the data in the first place.

The tracking and repurposing of data is vital for making sure that your business can run in an intelligent and agile fashion. From ensuring that you are tracking the right data to then integrating with various business integrations like reports and performance management software, clarity of data is key.

In fact, it’s fair to say that a company cannot house informed decision-making processes without clear and visible data. No matter how good your technology is, or how many superstar team members you have, if you’re not working with accurate and up to date data, then you may as well be driving in the fog with no lights on.

The truth of data visibility is that you can’t analyze what you can’t see.
